Even if you are a person that is not particularly interested about finding out what your future holds by having clairvoyant readings, or even checking out the astrology section in your local newspaper for example, there is still a fun way of predicting the future or passing on words of wisdom to your friends and family all from the comfort of your own home.
You do not even have to be psychic to do this – yes that’s right, I’m talking about making up a batch of fortune cookies!
They are really very simple to make and don’t need loads of ingredients or time. Check out this recipe to make up a batch of 15 cookies:
To make up a batch of 15 or so fortune cookies, you will to have the following ingredients:
- The egg whites from 2 large eggs;
- Half a teaspoon (approximately 2.2 grams) of vanilla extract;
- Half a teaspoon (approximately 2.2 grams) of almond extract;
- 3 tablespoons (approximately 41 grams) of vegetable oil;
- 8 tablespoons (approximately 62.5 grams) of flour;
- 1 and a half teaspoons (approximately 4 grams) of cornstarch;
- A quarter of a teaspoon (approximately 1.5 grams) of salt;
- 8 tablespoons (approximately 100 grams) of sugar;
- 3 teaspoons (approximately 15 grams) of water.
Other things you will need
Of course you cannot make fortune cookies without some basic kitchen equipment and utensils, so you will also need to have the following items on hand:
- A piece of paper;
- A pen;
- A pair of scissors;
- A spatula;
- A glass (or a cup);
- A couple of bowls;
- A muffin baking tray;
- A flat baking tray with greaseproof paper;
- Some tablespoons and teaspoons;
- Oven gloves.
Before you start baking, you will need to write out your fortunes on stripes of paper. Each strip of paper should measure about 3 inches (7.6 centimetres) long and 0.5 inches (1.25 centimetres) wide.
Write down 15 fortunes and then cut the strips out. Remember to write your fortunes on only one side of the paper!
Preheat your oven for a few minutes to 150 degrees Celsius, which roughly equates to Gas Mark 2.
This step can be a little tricky, as you will need to separate the egg whites from the yolks. Grab your bowl and one of the eggs, and lightly crack the egg on the edge of the bowl. You will need to turn the egg upright, and very carefully open the shell into two halves (but keep the egg in the lower half of the shell).
Working over the bowl, pour the egg from one half of the broken shell into the other, whilst at the same time letting the egg white fall into the bowl underneath but retaining the yolk intact in the shell halves as you pour.
Repeat this procedure for the second egg too. Next, whisk the egg white in the bowl and add the vanilla extract, almond extract and vegetable oil at the same time.
Add the flour, cornstarch, sugar, and salt into the other spare bowl you have, and then add in and mix the water.
Mix the ingredients of step 4 with the ingredients of step 3, and stir it until you have a smooth batter mix.
Once your batter is mixed properly, get a tablespoon and add a spoonful of batter onto the flat baking tray with greaseproof paper on it, making sure they are spaced about 3 inches apart.
Gently rock the tray back and forth and side to side, until each tablespoon of batter forms a 4-inch diameter circle.
Bake for 15 minutes (or until brown) making sure they are easy to remove from the tray.
Remove the fortune cookie with a spatula, and flip it over in your hand. Put a fortune paper strip into the middle of the fortune cookie and fold it in half, then using your cup or glass gently pull the edges of the fortune cookie over the rim.
Place the fortune cookies into the muffin baking tray, so that they retain their shape whilst they cool down.
